Kos (Greek: Κως), also spelled Cos, is a Greek island in the southeastern Aegean Sea, part of the Dodecanese archipelago opposite the Turkish coast near Bodrum. Covering 295.3 km², it is the third largest and second most populous of the Dodecanese, home to 37,089 residents as of the 2021 census. The island stretches roughly 42 km by 11.5 km, dominated by a limestone ridge culminating at Mount Dikaios (843 m) and bordered by a fertile coastal plain fed by natural springs.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, Kos was colonized by Dorian Greeks and rose to prominence through the sanctuary of Asclepius, a pioneering healing center where Hippocrates—Regarded as the “Father of Medicine”—taught. Over the centuries it passed into Roman, Byzantine, Knights Hospitaller, Ottoman, and Italian hands before rejoining Greece in 1947. Vestiges of these eras include the Asclepeion ruins, Neratzia Castle, medieval walls, and Ottoman–Italian town planning.
